Behind the photographs

The story
in the frame.

On 28 August 2025, Kotesh photographed workers harvesting shrimp at farms in Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh. The series follows the harvest from nets in the water to sorting and loading on the bank.

The photographs were made as increased United States tariffs raised concerns for India’s shrimp export industry. Rather than treating trade as an abstract headline, the story places the people doing the work at its centre.

Nets, hands, ponds and the rhythm of a working day form a visual record of an industry connected to markets far beyond the coast.

Photographs and field captions by Jwala Kotesh. Story introduction adapted from the portfolio.
